Young Carers are defined as children and young people who look after someone in their family who has an illness, disability, mental health or substance misuse problem, taking on practical and/or emotional caring responsibilities that would normally be expected of an adult.

Although we do not directly work with Young Carers under the age of 16, we work closely with HSCP and Barnardos. We hope that working with HSCP and Barnardos will make the transition from childrens services to adult services smoother.

The Young Carers Service provides a range of supports linked to the needs of the young person. This includes activities that provide respite from the caring role, the opportunity to access peer support from other Young Carers within a group setting and the opportunity to participate in national events such as the Scottish Young Carers Festival.  A major function of the service is to support Young Carers with issues that concern them and assist them to access other services such as College or Skills Development Scotland.
