What is stress?

Stress is a common problem that affects almost all of us at some point in our lives. Learning to identify what causes you stress, when you are experiencing stress and different ways of coping with stress can greatly improve both your mental and physical wellbeing. The centre offers a service which can help Carers manage stress. These include:

One to One Treatments

One to one treatments engage with the whole person, taking into consideration their emotional, physical and mental wellbeing and treating them in a holistic way. Professional Stress Management therapists will work with individual Carers to agree the most important interventions. This may include aromatherapy, relaxation instruction and various massage techniques. Appointments last just under an hour and are arranged as a block of 6 consecutive appointments over 6 weeks.

Treatments

  • How does reflexology work? - Reflexology works as the pressure techniques applied to the feet or hands interact as part of the body's nervous system creating: relaxation, improved circulation, exercise of the nervous system and the benefits of touch to create a sense of wellbeing.
  • How does aromatherapy work? - It has long been known that stress accounts for a staggering amount of illness in modern society, and aromatherapy offers one of the finest ways of combatting the ravages of stress. Aromatherapy is a technique that uses the body's sense of smell to help boost your mood, relieve stress, energize and encourage better health.
  • What is massage? - Massage is a 'hands on' treatment in which a therapist manipulates muscles and other soft tissues of the body to improve health and wellbeing. Massage helps relieve muscle tension, reduce stress, and evoke feelings of calmness. Although massage affects the body as a whole, it particularly influences the activity of the musculoskeletal, circulatory, lymphatic and nervous system.
  • Indian Head Massage works on areas affected by mental and emotional stress. Working with a firm and gentle rhythm it helps to relieve muscular discomfort and tension as well as calming the spirit and aiding relaxation. It also improves circulation in the head, enhances the senses and promotes clear thinking.

If you are interested in taking part in Stress Management and are a registered Carer with us, please contact the centre and we will place your name on a waiting list.

Outreach Stress Management

Inverclyde Carers Centre has been running Stress Management sessions within the community. Each session consists of one to one holistic therapy. Outreach Stress Management has been a great success, helping Carers that may not have been able to attend otherwise.

Through funding from The Big Lottery the centre’s Stress Management provision has also been developed in community locations to help reduce travel costs and time away from caring.  By providing supports closer to Carers we are able to support those who would not normally be able to access a block of 6 hour long holistic therapy sessions or groups.

Stress Management Courses

Experienced Holistic Therapists will lead a 6 week course which will help Carers identify the causes of stress and make small changes to help them cope with it. This will include considering the impact diet and exercise have on stress and learning relaxation techniques.
